  1. THE POSTER PROGRAM.

  3. Version 1.3 12/20/93.

  5. INTRODUCTION.
  6.  
  7. This program has been designed to let you easily and quickly create 
  8. large posters  signs, and banners,  printing them at up to 9 feet by 9 
  9. feet.
  10.  
  11. The program was originally created to allow my daughter to generate 
  12. large posters for use in presentations for her 4-H club.  The posters 
  13. are text and graphcs.  After creating a poster, she prints in double 
  14. size (4 sheets of paper) and pastes it onto a poster board.  For a 
  15. typical presentation, she will use six to ten posters.

  17. The program has been enhanced to be of general use in a variety of 
  18. situations for printing big pages:
  19. 1. Creating large posters for presentations, projects, charts, etc.
  20. 2. Creating large signs for advertisments, announcements, etc.
  21. 3. Creating banners for special events, etc.
  22. 4. Enlarging pictures, charts, etc. for display.

  24. This program is "Freely Distributed". The author has given permission 
  25. for the file to be distributed without restriction, but does not permit 
  26. alterations to the file.

  28. ADVANTAGES OF POSTER.
  29.  
  30. This program is very easy to use, and it is very simple to create large 
  31. posters and banners.  It is especially useful when you have a number of 
  32. fonts installed, as the font selection menu displays renditions of all 
  33. the true-type fonts. The final poster size is fully configurable.

  38. 2. Adds support for OLE embedded objects (like microsoft draw & 
  39. wordart).

  64. INSTALLATION.
  65.  
  66. If you have unzipped the files, then you have practically installed the 
  67. program.  
  68. The package consists of the following files:
  69. 1. This README file.
  70. 2. POSTER.TXT, which is  the documentation for POSTER.  All of this 
  71.    documentation is also in the on-line help file.
  72. 3. POSTER.EXE, which is the poster program itself.
  73. 4. POSTER.HLP, which is the on-line help file.
  74. 5. CTL3D.DLL, the 3d controls library.

  76. To install the program, do the following after unzipping the poster 
  77. download file:
  78. 1. Create a directory called POSTER.
  79. 2. Copy the files POSTER.TXT, POSTER.EXE, and POSTER.HLP into that 
  80. directory.
  81. 3. Copy the file CTL3D.DLL to your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. 
  82. 4. Create a program manager icon for POSTER by doing the following:
  83.     a. Select the program manager group where you want the icon.
  84.     b. Select NEW.
  85.     c. Select Program Item.
  86.     d. In the dialog box, fill in Description ("Poster"), 
  87.         The command line: C:\poster\poster.exe
  88.     The working directory: C:\poster
  89.     If you have unzipped into a different directory, use it instead of 
  90.     c:\poster.
  91. 5. You may view and print the documentation file, POSTER.TXT, with 
  92. notepad.
  93.       However, this entire document is included in the online help file.

  95. USING POSTER.
  96.  
  97. To start using poster, simply double click on the poster icon.  POSTER 
  98. will start and ask you for the poster or banner format. After selecting 
  99. the format you want, it will present an empty page to you.  Just start 
  100. typing to begin making your poster.

  102. You can also associate "POS" file types with poster (do this with File 
  103. Manager).  Then, double clicking on a POS file will automatically start 
  104. poster with that file.

  107. PRINTERS.
  108.  
  109. This program has been successfully tested on the following printers: 
  110.     HP Laserjet II and compatibles
  111.     HP Laserjet III - see special setup instructions below.
  112.     HP LaserJet 4 - See special setup instructions below
  113.     HP DeskJet PLUS
  114.     HP DeskJet 500
  115.     Epson dot matrix and compatibles
  116.     Postscript printer - See special setup instructions below

  118. If you cannot get POSTER to work properly on your printer, try checking 
  119. the box marked "Method A" in the PRINT dialog box. This should work ALL 
  120. printers (but not plotters).  If this still doesn't work, try "Method 
  121. B".  Also, see the special setup instructions below.

  125. LASERJET III USERS.
  126. If the posters you print are missing characters at page edges, then do 
  127. the following:
  128. 1. Select "Method A" in the Poster Print Dialog box.  Also, be sure your 
  129. printer is set to 300 dpi.
  130.  
  131. LASERJET 4 USERS.
  132. To successfully print posters, you must configure your printer as 
  133. follows:
  134. 1. Select "Printer Setup":
  135. 2. Set resolution to 300 dpi. (At 600dpi, printing takes a very long 
  136. time, and may hang the printer.)
  137. 3. Select "options". 
  138. 4. Select "Graphics Mode" = "raster", "Graphics Quality"="high", and
  139.      check "print true-type as graphics".
  140. If posters still do not print properly, then in the PRINT dialog box, 
  141. check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always work.  
  142.  
  143. POSTSCRIPT PRINTER USERS.
  144. POSTER cannot always automatically switch a postscript printer from 
  145. portrait mode to landscape mode.  If  "Print Preview" shows the printer 
  146. to be in the incorrect mode,use the "Print Setup" menu item to manually 
  147. select the proper mode.

  149. If you get postscript errors, or you are loosing characters at page 
  150. boundaries:
  151. 1. From the control panel, select Printers, then select 'Setup.
  152. 2. Select "options", then select "advanced".
  153. 3. Select "print true type fonts as" "Bitmap (type 3)".
  154. 4. Close the control panel.
  155. 5. Start POSTER.
  156. If posters still do not print properly, or print too slow, then in the 
  157. PRINT dialog box, check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always 
  158. work.
  159.  
  160. COLOR PRINTERS.
  161. POSTER should now properly print color text and graphics.
  162. If you import a *.bmp file (a bitmap file) and it prints in black-and-
  163. white instead of color, use the following workaround:
  164. 1. Start Windows Paintbrush.
  165. 2. Import the *.bmp file into Paintbrush.
  166. 3. Copy the picture to the clipboard.
  167. 4. In POSTER, Paste the picture from the clipboard.
  168.  
  169. SLOW PRINTING.
  170. Sorry, but Windows printing is s..l..o..w.  I have no good solution for 
  171. this.  Be sure to verify your poster with "Preview" in the "Print" 
  172. dialog box.  Then, have patience while it prints.
